How they work, what to look for, how to compare plans, set yours up and explain investing in the stock market.
529s are invested in the stock market and have way more growth potential than a high yield savings account, CD or basic savings vehicle.
Picking a 529 plan
Check if your state has a tax benefit for having your state sponsored 529 plan. (California doesn't)
If your state does look at the plan and check the investment options & expense ratios (fees)
If your state doesn't: go to savingforcollege.com or Google top performing 529's
Compare the plans based on...
Investment options offered (do they work for your goals?)
Do they have low expense ratios?
Have they performed well over time?

(This one isn't necessary but it is important for some.) Do they provide a platform where others can contribute to the 529 as a gift to the beneficiary?
